This workshop is for you if you are just considering adoption, waiting to adopt, an adoptive parent, birth parent, adoptee or professional working with adoptive families. NASW CE credits for 5 hours available upon request.
Speakers will include: Psychotherapists and attorneys specializing in adoption, adoptive parents, birth parents, and adoptees who have had varied experiences with open adoption.
The concept of open adoption typically stirs anxiety and uncertainty for all adoption triad members. Creating, maintaining and managing the issues that come up in the life cycle of an open adoption will be discussed.
If you are considering adoption, you are probably confused by the multiple meanings of the term “open adoption” and at the same time under a time limit to set terms for a long term plan. Families involved in varying levels of open adoption experience different emotions and issues during the life cycle and need a framework for understanding and dealing with their own and the other triad members at various points in the adoption life cycle.
The fact is that despite strong opinions about open adoption, there is still more anecdotal than sufficient longitudinal research-based information. This adds to the confusion that families feel when thinking about how to handle open adoption in a way that is best for their child.
In this workshop, the different models of open adoption and the life cycle issues and tasks for each adoption triad member will be presented so that you can understand the full range of options available to your family as you consider and process what is best for your child.
In this workshop you will learn about:
- The different kinds of open adoptions
- Some typical stages, issues and emotions in open adoptions as experienced by the children, the adoptive parents and the birth parents
- Issues to consider in planning for your "post-placement adoption contact agreement”
- Skills to navigate the ever-changing relationships between birth families, children and adoptive families.
- The impact of the internet on these relationships
A detailed workshop schedule will be posted soon.
