Date: 2009
date to be announced
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Place: Princeton Hyatt, 102 Carnegie Center, Princeton, NJ 08540
This workshop is for you if you are considering international adoption, a pre-adoptive parent in the waiting phase, or if you are a new adoptive parent working on transitioning your child to home, or an adoption professional. In addition, some adoption agencies will accept this workshop as partial fulfillment of your home study requirements (certificates will be issued).
Session 1:
Time: 8:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
How to Help your Child Adapt during the First Year at Home
Speaker: A Psychologist, A Speech and Language Specialist and An Occupational Therapist
A psychologist, an occupational therapist and a speech specialist will review the stages of adjustment that children typically go through when they move from an institution or a foster home to their adoptive family, and discuss how to ease the initial transition and adjustment when adopting younger or older children internationally. You will learn about specific strategies for dealing with sleep, eating, attachment, habits and behaviors as well as about signs that indicate specialized services are needed. While the focus will be on the development and emotions of the child, some ways in which parents may need to be ready to change themselves to accommodate their children's transitional needs will also be identified.
Session 2:
Time: 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Travel and Transition
Panel Moderator, Joni S. Mantell, LCSW, a psychotherapist specializing in adoption issues.
The panel is a group of parents who adopted younger and older children internationally. They will talk about their experiences traveling, meeting and settling their children into routines at home. The emphasis will be on minimizing stressors for both the child and the parent. Tips from the front line will be shared.
Session 3:
Time: 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Trans Racial Adoptee Panel
A panel of adults will share their experiences growing up in Trans Racial adoptive families and their thoughts about how adoptive parents can help their children with adoption issues and to build a positive racial and cultural identity and sense of self-esteem. Practical tips and emotional issues will be identified.
Session 4:
Time: 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Closing statements by Joni Mantell, LCSW, Director of The IACCenter
Identification of support systems and other ways for international adoptive parents to take care of them selves will be addressed.
